A voice for metastatic breast cancer
Metastatic breast cancer
-
Metastatic breast cancer is cancer that has spread beyond the primary site in the breast or local lymph nodes to more distant sites in the body. The most common places that breast cancer spreads to are the bones, liver, lungs and brain. Metastatic breast cancer is also known as stage IV, advanced or secondary breast cancer.
-
About 5% of the 20,000 people who are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Australia are diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. For these people, this is their first diagnosis of breast cancer. This type of metastatic breast cancer is called ‘de novo’ metastatic breast cancer – de novo means ‘from the beginning’.
However, most people diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer have previously been diagnosed with early breast cancer. Someone diagnosed with early breast cancer has a 20-30% chance that in their lifetime they will experience recurrence of their breast cancer somewhere else in their body. This could be years or decades after their original early breast cancer diagnosis.
-
Australia’s state and territory cancer registries do not systematically collect and report stage at diagnosis or recurrence data. Without this information, it is not possible to know exactly how many people are living with metastatic breast cancer in Australia. However, the Cancer Institute New South Wales recently calculated that there are about 24,000 people living with metastatic breast cancer in Australia, far more than many people had thought.
-
No, apart from in a very small number of people, metastatic breast cancer is not considered to be curable. However, there are many drugs available to treat metastatic breast cancer. Metastatic breast cancer is therefore considered to be a ‘treatable but not curable’ disease. This means that although we do not yet have a cure for metastatic breast cancer, people with metastatic breast cancer can be treated with a variety of different drugs, often for many years.
About
MBC Action Australia
MBC Action Australia is a consumer-driven organisation whose mission is to improve the lives and health outcomes of the women and men living with metastatic breast cancer in Australia.
Led by people living with metastatic breast cancer, we use our collective voices and experiences to advocate for improvements in policy, supports and services specific to the needs of our community.
We work with supporters and collaborate with other organisations on shared priorities. Through collaborative action we aim to enable people with metastatic breast cancer to live their lives to their full potential for as long as possible.
Our mission
MBC Action Australia was formed to advance the collective voice of people affected by metastatic breast cancer. We aim to use our voice and experience to identify priority areas of need and motivate allied organisations to work with us on a shared agenda for change.
Being diagnosed with a life-limiting disease brings into focus what is important. We are united in the urgency of our ambition and by an impatience to make a difference for people currently living with metastatic breast cancer and those who will be diagnosed tomorrow.
Our structure
Board
Our board is in charge of governance and leadership decisions relating to MBC Action Australia. As set out in our Constitution, at least half of our board members must be people living with metastatic breast cancer. Our other board members include key supporters and allies, some of whom have a personal history of breast cancer or extensive professional experience in the field of cancer.
Working groups and sub-committees
Working closely with our Board are several working groups and sub-committees tasked with getting the work done.
Our principles
-
We share and collaborate widely, building on the excellent work of existing breast cancer organisations and services to better support people with metastatic breast cancer.
-
We are honest about the realities and uncertainties of living with metastatic breast cancer and unapologetic in the urgency of our calls for action.
-
Our ambition is to drive lasting change that will improve outcomes for people with metastatic breast cancer.
-
We are inclusive of the diversity of people diagnosed and living with metastatic breast cancer across Australia.

Our history
In March 2024, University of Sydney researchers brought together a group of people living with metastatic breast cancer for a 2-day workshop. The aim of the workshop was to understand information and support needs of people with metastatic breast cancer and identify strategies to address these needs.
One of the key recommendations from the workshop was to establish an Australian advocacy organisation focused specifically on metastatic breast cancer. From here the idea for MBC Action Australia was formed, with several of the workshop participants working with supporters and allies to establish the organisation. MBC Action Australia was launched on 16 October 2024.
